<The Third and Final Continental, 세 번째 그리고 마지막 대륙>을 읽고...

1990년 출판되었고 2000년 미국 퓰리처상을 받은 단편집으로 우리나라 번역본 제목은 <축복 받은 집>이지만 원래 영문판 제목은 <Interpreter of Maladies, 질병의 통역자>이다. 동아일보사에서 펴낸 번역본도 영문판과 같이 아홉 편이 실렸는데  나는 개인적으로 마지막에 실린 이 단편 <The Third and Final Continental, 세 번째 그리고 마지막 대륙>이 가장 좋았다. 참고로 아홉 편의 제목을 적어 본다.

 우리 말 번역본을 지난 7월에 읽었으며 영문판은 계획에 없었다. 그러나 마지막 단편을 읽으면서 1인칭 주인공 '나'가 영국에서 미국에 처음 발을 딛고 영국과 다른 점을 몇가지 이야기하는 부분에 "영국에서는 엘리베이터를 미국에서는 리프트라고 하였다."라는 문장이 나오는데, 원문이나 번역 둘 중 하나가 잘못되었다 생각하여 확인도 할 겸 영문판을 구입하였다.

 영문판에 "I learned that Americans drove on the right side of the road, and not the left, and that they called a lift an elevator and an engaged phone busy."로 나온다. 역시 번역이 잘못되었음을 알았다. 그러나 첫 부분은 원문을 그대로 옮기면 어색해 질 수 있는데 우리말답게 잘 옮겼다고 생각한다. 즉 영문을 그대로 옮긴다면, "미국사람들은 오른쪽 도로로 운전한다, 왼쪽이 아니다~'인데 번역본엔 내가 기억하기로 "영국은 오른쪽에 운전석이 있고 미국은 왼쪽에 있다."였던 것 같다.  내가 1970년 대 말에서 1980년 초까지 이집트 카이로에서 근무할 때 영국에서 그린 건축설계도면은 'elevator'가 'lift' 로 표기되어 있어 퍽 생소하게 생각하였다.

당시 국내에서는 사람을 태우는 승강기는 엘리베이터이고 건물 외부에 공사용으로 사용하는 승강기는 리프트라고 했기 때문이다. 기억하기로 영국과 미국의 단어를 달리 사용하는 건축 관련 어휘에서, hardware/ ironmongery, form/shuttering, base board/skirting board 등이 떠오른다. 한글판을 읽고 후기에 줄거리를 적었기 때문에 여기선 더욱 간단히 적어본다.

 1940년대 초반 인도에서 태어나서 영국 런던으로 건너가 어렵게 공부하여 미국 보스턴의 MIT 대학교 듀이 도서관에 취직하여 30년을 생활하며 지난날을 회상하는 형식의 이야기이다. 우주선이 달에 갔다 왔던 1969년, 미국인의 자부심이 가장 높았던 시기에 당시 가난한 인도출신 이민자가 겪었던 고통과 슬픔을 결국 인내와 품위로 극복하고 나이가 들어 평온한 삶을 얻은 이야기를 따뜻한 시선으로 술회하고  있다. 또한 고향 어머니의 소개로 만나 결혼한 아내에 대한 이야기도 잔잔한 감동을 준다. 그러나 무엇보다도 미국 이주 30년이 흐른 후 아내 Mala와 함께 처음 6주간 주당 8달러에 세 들어 살았던 103세 미국 할머니 크로포트가 운영하던 2층 집을 승용차로 지나치면서 회상하는 부분이 가장 인상 깊다.
 
 When we make that drive, I always make it a point to take Massachusetts Avenue, in spite of the traffic. I barely recognize the buildings now, but each time I am there I return instantly to those six weeks as if they were only the other day, and I slow down and point to Mrs. Croft's street, saying to my son, here was my first home in America, where I lived with a woman who was 103. "Remember?" Mala says, and smiles, amazed, as I am, that there was ever a time that we were strangers. My son always expresses his astonishment, not at Mrs. Croft's age, but at how little I paid in rent, a fact nearly as inconceivable to him as a flag on the moon was to a women born in 1866. In my son's eye I see the ambition that had first hurled me across the world. In a few years he will graduate and pave his way, alone who is still living, a mother who is happy and strong. Whenever he is discouraged, I tell him that if I can survive on three continents, then there is no obstacle he can not conquer. While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent mere hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know that my achievement is quite ordinary. I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination.
 
 그러고 보니 주인공이 미국에 도착한 해 1969년은 내가 고등학교를 졸업한 해이니 나보다 대략 7살 정도 위라 생각했으나 주인공이 36살 늦은 나이에 결혼하였으니 나보다 17살 정도 위이다. 1969년 그 시절 인도나 한국의 실정이 엇비슷하기 때문에 더욱 이 작품에 공감이 가는 것 같다. 다른 작품보다 비교적 쉬운 단어로 씌어져 주변 사람들에게도 권하고 싶은 단편이다.
